Glen Nevis Evening

Glen Nevis Evening
£135
Image size: 200mm x 200mm

Walking up Ben Nevis in March 2019, I looked uphill to the left of the path and saw this picture. It often happens like that: brought to a stop by a sideways glance, then a scrabble for the sketchbook, the chinagraph pencils and the camera - anything and everything to capture the image before the wind changes or a cloud passes over and the light and the shadows cast are lost. Really, it‘s just a moment.

But in that moment, you see everything. You know this is the composition you have been waiting for, and that you won‘t be given a better opportunity today. You know the special, unique features that have called to you, you foresee the colours you will use and how they will work together, and you can tell how the finished print will look. All in that single moment.

What really sang to me in this image was a tiny detail: the featheriness of the ends of the twigs where the trees‘ branches came to an end. There were no leaves as yet, but the buds appearing in so many places created a kind of haze that defined the farthest curved extent of each bough. So easy to see, yet so difficult to describe.

This little copse of trees, clustered around a spring, punctuating the peat hags on this formidable Scottish hillside.

In order to make Glen Nevis Evening I hand-carved three separate lino blocks, then printed each block in a different colour after the layers previously printed had dried. To produce my Glen Nevis Morning and Glen Nevis Afternoon prints, I reprinted the same image from the same lino blocks, but using different colour inks. The resulting three prints look very beautiful hung close to each other on the same wall or with all three mounted in one frame.

Glen Nevis Evening has been printed Hawthorn inks on 140gsm white cartridge paper. Image size 200mm x 200mm. Paper size 296mm x 420mm. Edition of 15.

The price shown includes postage and packing for delivery to a UK address. Every print dispatched is wrapped in acid-free tissue paper and securely packaged in a sturdy cardboard tube, and delivered to the address required by post via Royal Mail or Parcel Force (depending on the size of the print) and signed for upon delivery.

If you would like a print delivered to an address outside the UK, please let me know when ordering and I will investigate whether you need to pay anything extra to cover the increased postage price.
